How to make Scrunchies?

Scrunchy_ a 90’s fashion that has again entered into the world of hair accessories. The way scrunchies have made a return in the market of hair accessories, it does not look like this fashion will fade away in the near future. The internationally most followed actresses have also supported the scrunchy fashion by pairing it up with their outfits. Another reason for scrunchies hype in hair accessories is quarantine. Yes, you might wonder what the relationship between a scrunchy and a quarantine is? The ease that comes with wearing scrunchies has helped the females a lot. During quarantine, the women have been so busy putting up all the business work, house maintenance, and kids together that they do not have enough time to look after the proper nourishment of their hair. In this hard time, scrunchies have done a great job because they prevent hair-falling and also very easy to use on any hair texture. The exciting side of scrunchies is that you can make them at home in a maximum of thirty minutes. Here is a complete guide regarding homemade scrunchies.

Material You Need to Make Scrunchies

You do not even need to go to the market to buy material for a scrunchy. Do you know that the material you mostly throw out is enough to make a scrunchy? All you need to make a scrunchy is;

  • Elastic
  • Piece of fabric
  • A sewing machine (if you do not have it, you can simply use a needle to stitch a scrunchy)
  • Some needles and safety pins to set the fabric for sewing
  • sake

How to make Scrunchies?

Here is a complete step-by-step guide to scrunchies; you only need to follow these simple steps to get your hands on a fantastic end product (scrunchy).

Measure and Cut the Elastic

Cut 6 inches (15.24cm) of elastic for a normal-sized scrunchie. If your hair is extra thick, you can cut one inch extra. While choosing elastic, you need to make sure that it has great flexibility if you want your scrunchie to last longer.

Measure and Cut the Fabric

Take a rectangular piece of fabric which should range between 24-28 inches long and 4-6 inches wide, depending on your scrunchie preference. But if you have already added 1 inch in the elastic length due to your hair thickness, you must also add 2 inches more into the length of fabric. It is better to measure a little bit of extra fabric if you are doing this for the first time. Because this extra piece of fabric might help you in case of any mishap. But if you are a regular scrunchie maker, then you do not need to measure extra fabric.

Sew the Fabric

Once you have done the fabric cutting, you need to fold the edges of the fabric so that the two free ends join each other. Now sew the free ends of the scrunchy with the help of a sewing machine. (Note: if you do have a sewing machine, you can simply stitch it with the help of a needle sewing by hand). Now your fabric is in the shape of a pipe with two open holes at both ends. When you sew the fabric, the printed or colored side of the fabric was inward. Now you need to move the colored or printed side of stitched scrunchy to the outside with the help of a tube or pipe.

Add the Elastic

Attach a safety pin at one side of the elastic and pass the elastic through the fabric tube. Also, care about the other end of the elastic and hold it carefully not to enter the fabric tube. Once you have passed the elastic completely through the fabric tube, pin both elastic ends together. Your scrunchy is almost complete, and now you need to sew the overlap pined elastic ends. And here you go with your homemade scrunchy.

Wear Your Scrunchie

You can make different attractive hairstyles by using your homemade scrunchies. For example;

  • You can make a great bun with your scrunchie.
  • You can make a loose ponytail with a scrunchie. For a stylish look, you can also add some waves to your loose ponytail.
  • You can tie up your hair high with the help of a scrunchie.
  • You can make a side ponytail or a side braid.
  • Space buns are all the craze right now

Usually, a standard scrunchie is a round elastic one, but the scrunchies can also include bow and scarf scrunchies. The fabric you can use to make a scrunchie are; velvet, organza, silk, lurex, furry, cotton, chiffon, fuzzy, and jersey material. The fabric around the elastic of a scrunchie  protects your hair from damage.

Most, scrunchies do not crease your hair. The scrunchies are gentle than the other elastic hair accessories. Even if you tie it several times, it will still be looser than the black skinny standard elastic hair accessories. If you have never used a scrunchie, then you are missing a major hair comfort in your life. This is your time to make a homemade scrunchie by following the above steps.
